Landscape Narrative |
Plot is surrounded by a red spruce / great laurel - mountain laurel shrubland, beyond that is a spruce - hemlock / great laurel forest, There is also a large deciduous forest signature beyond that which is a black cherry - red maple - yellow birch / American beech / hayscented fern. Devil's Gulch is located ca. 1 mile South of plot, Moore Run is located ca. 0.7 of a mile North, Otter Creek is ca. 1.2 miles E and McGowen Mountain is 1.6 miles West. Area is isolated and untouched since it was designated as wilderness in 1975.;Open exposed rock pile consisting of 2 dm thick x 0.5m across angular chunks of weathered sandstone. There is some scattered woody debris in plot with some fire scarring. Nosigns of recent anthropologic disturbance. Site is protected by near impenetrable Rhodendron maximum in all directions. This is one of the nicest occurrences I have had the pleasure to observe. Likely it was once a spruce - hemlock / rhododendron forest which was opened by post logging fires roughly 100 years ago.
